You are not always disappointed by reality.
Sometimes you are disappointed because reality did not follow the picture you created before reality even arrived.
We live inside expectations.
More than we realize.
We expect…
that life should look…
a certain way.
That relationships…
should feel…
a certain way.
That love…
should give us…
a certain feeling.
That work…
should provide us…
with something.
That success…
should finally…
make us happy.
And when reality does not deliver what we expected, conflict begins.
We become disappointed.
Angry.
Frustrated.
Anxious.
Afraid.
Or exhausted.
And sometimes…
we do not even understand…
why.
Because the external situation…
may not have changed.
The job is still there.
The relationship is still there.
The partner is still there.
The family is still there.
The life…
is still there.
But something inside you is no longer matching what you expected from it.
And this is where…
we need to look…
at expectations.
What are they?
Where do they come from?
And perhaps…
more importantly…
how much of your life…
is influenced…
by expectations…
you have never consciously examined?
Expectations do not suddenly appear when you become an adult.
They develop.
From childhood.
From education.
From culture.
From religion.
From relationships.
From positive experiences.
And negative experiences.
From assumptions.
From conclusions.
From everything…
you have learned…
about how life should work.
And eventually, those conclusions become your conscious expectations.
You expect…
because you believe.
You expect…
because you have experienced.
You expect…
because you have seen others…
doing something.
You expect…
because someone told you…
that this is how it works.
And after enough repetition…
you may no longer recognize…
the expectation…
as an expectation.
You experience it as reality.
But expectations…
are not reality.
They are internal structures…
about reality.
And those structures…
can become extremely powerful.
Because we do not only decide…
what we want.
We also decide…
how we should get it.
What it should look like.
How another person…
should behave.
What we should feel…
when it finally happens.
We create the result before the experience has even begun.
And then…
we enter life…
with the picture already in our hands.
We can see this…
through labels.
Labels are everywhere.
And labels…
immediately create…
images.
If I say…
shark.
Something happens.
You may immediately imagine…
danger.
Teeth.
The ocean.
Fear.
But how close…
is a shark…
to you…
at this moment?
The label creates an internal response even when the external object is absent.
And we do this…
with almost everything.
Romance.
Success.
Family.
Career.
Freedom.
Happiness.
Soulmate.
Destiny.
Every label…
can create a picture.
And inside that picture…
there are expectations.
Take romance.
What does romance mean…
to you?
Perhaps…
a dinner.
Candlelight.
Wine.
A beautiful restaurant.
A beach.
A sunrise.
Someone holding your hand.
Someone looking at you…
in a particular way.
And there is nothing wrong…
with any of those things.
But the question is not what romance looks like.
The question is…
what you expect it…
to do…
inside you.
What should happen…
when the candles are lit?
What should happen…
when someone takes you…
to the beach?
What should happen…
when someone says…
that they love you?
And perhaps…
this is where…
the real expectation begins.
You expect the external event to create or fulfill an internal state.
You expect romance…
to make you feel loved.
You expect success…
to make you feel valuable.
You expect money…
to make you feel safe.
You expect a partner…
to make you feel complete.
You expect a job…
to give meaning…
to your life.
And once we move…
into those expectations…
life becomes…
much more complicated.
Because now other people have to match pictures they never created.
You have a partner.
You have expectations.
You have an image.
You have a checklist.
You know…
consciously or unconsciously…
what love should look like.
What loyalty should look like.
What romance should look like.
What your soulmate…
should understand.
Perhaps…
they should know…
what you feel…
without you saying it.
Perhaps…
they should understand…
what you need…
without you explaining it.
Perhaps…
they should fulfill something…
inside you…
and figure it out…
on their own.
And when they do not match your internal picture, you become disappointed.
But what exactly…
did they fail?
Reality?
Or your checklist?
And then…
we can make another person…
responsible…
for our disappointment.
Not necessarily because…
they did something wrong.
But because…
they did not match…
what we expected.
This mechanism does not exist only in romantic relationships.
It exists…
everywhere.
Parents have expectations…
towards children.
Children have expectations…
towards parents.
Employers have expectations…
towards employees.
Employees have expectations…
towards work.
We have expectations…
towards ourselves.
And perhaps…
those are some of the most powerful…
expectations of all.
Because you may be trying to become someone you consciously decided you should be.
You should be successful.
Independent.
Strong.
Happy.
Disciplined.
Fearless.
Productive.
Healed.
You should have solved…
your problems by now.
You should have stopped…
the addiction by now.
You should not…
feel anxious anymore.
You should not…
have panic attacks.
You should not…
feel exhausted.
And your conscious expectations begin fighting your internal reality.
This is where…
inner conflict begins.
Because there may be…
something inside you…
that your conscious beliefs…
do not understand.
Your unconscious.
Your subconscious.
Your nervous system.
Whatever language…
you want to use.
Something is delivering…
an internal message.
And your conscious mind…
may respond:
“This should not be happening.”
But it is happening.
And now…
you have two realities.
The reality…
you consciously expect.
And the reality…
you are internally experiencing.
When those two realities collide, the conflict becomes personal.
You may call it…
fighting demons.
Fighting yourself.
Bad habits.
Karma.
Self-sabotage.
Weakness.
But perhaps…
you are not fighting…
against an external enemy.
Perhaps…
you are fighting…
against information…
coming from inside you.
Information…
that does not match…
the conscious structure…
you have built around yourself.
Your unconscious truth meets your conscious expectations.
And neither one…
simply disappears.
The expectation remains.
The internal state remains.
And you stand…
between them.
Trying to make them…
fit.
This can influence…
addiction.
Fear.
Anxiety.
Panic attacks.
Burnout.
Relationships.
And many other situations…
we experience in life.
Because eventually, expectations can become driven by fear.
You may be afraid…
to lose a relationship.
Even when…
you are unhappy inside it.
You may be afraid…
to lose a job.
Even when…
you do not want…
to do the job anymore.
You may be afraid…
to lose a social environment.
Even when…
you no longer feel…
connected to it.
Why?
Because the thing…
may give you something…
that you have given meaning.
And you are no longer protecting the thing itself. You are protecting what you believe it means.
The job…
may mean safety.
The partner…
may mean belonging.
The career…
may mean value.
The social environment…
may mean identity.
And once fear…
enters the expectation…
you may begin…
protecting something…
you do not even want.
This is one of the strangest conflicts we can create.
We are afraid…
to lose something…
that makes us unhappy.
And then…
we stay.
We perform.
We adapt.
We suppress.
We regulate.
We tell ourselves…
that everything is fine.
Until eventually…
something inside us…
can no longer…
match the expectation.
And then it feels like losing control.
You may suddenly experience…
anxiety.
A panic attack.
Exhaustion.
Depression.
Or an increasing need…
to regulate yourself…
through something external.
Alcohol.
Substances.
Shopping.
Work.
Achievement.
Anything…
that temporarily changes…
your internal state.
And then the situation becomes more complicated because the solution becomes another expectation.
If you have addiction…
and someone tells you…
that addiction is a disease…
you may expect…
to be healed.
And if nothing changes…
you experience…
another disappointment.
You may fight harder.
Use more willpower.
Try to become stronger.
Try to defeat yourself.
And when the old pattern…
returns…
you may fall…
even deeper.
Because the expectation was never fulfilled.
You expected…
the problem to disappear.
But perhaps…
you were looking…
in the wrong direction.
Perhaps…
the first question…
should not be:
“How do I get rid of this?”
Perhaps…
the first question…
should be:
“What is actually happening inside me?”
What drives me?
What am I afraid of?
What do I expect?
Where did that expectation come from?
Is this expectation…
actually mine?
Or did I inherit it?
Learn it?
Copy it?
Accept it…
without ever questioning it?
Clarity begins when we become aware of what we are doing.
Not when we create…
another label.
Not when we create…
another identity.
Not when we create…
another expectation…
about how we should be.
But when we stop…
long enough…
to observe.
What is there?
What am I feeling?
What am I expecting?
What happens…
when reality…
does not match it?
And perhaps the most important question is this:
What am I protecting…
with all these expectations?
Because somewhere…
beneath the labels.
Beneath the beliefs.
Beneath the conclusions.
Beneath the fear.
There is…
you.
Not the person…
you think…
you should become.
Not the person…
other people expect you to be.
Not the image…
you have built…
around your life.
But the person who is actually experiencing it.
And until you become aware…
of that difference…
you may continue…
fighting your internal reality…
in order to protect…
an expectation.
But once you can see…
the expectation…
as an expectation…
something changes.
You no longer…
have to obey it.
You can examine it.
You can question it.
You can ask…
whether it belongs…
to you.
And perhaps…
for the first time…
you can begin…
to create clarity…
between…
what you consciously expect…
and what you are…
actually experiencing.
That is where awareness begins.
And awareness…
is where…
the possibility…
of a different response…
begins.
